Why a Shared Food Program?
As a locavore personal chef, I spend a lot of time running about, going to farmers markets and farms, gathering up the wonderful things they grow, produce, bake and make there.
Unlike myself, and my compatriots, most people have real jobs and lives, so they can’t possibly dedicate this much time to gathering their food directly from farms.
Though it is getting better everyday, local food is not yet coming from farms into towns in large quantities, and shoppers find it hard to pull together the kinds of ingredients we have access to on a regular basis.
As we have to dash about anyway, it seems a shame to not bring back as much as we can,
not to mention that this food is too amazingly good not to share,
and so it is to this end we have created the following program:
Every Monday and Wednesday, teams of about four dedicated cooks go into a rented, certified kitchen where together we creatively cook a whole lot of dishes out of whatever delicious local foods we have gathered for the week. On Monday the food is nose to tail Omnivore, on Weds is is lacto/ovo Vegevore.
We pack the food up into containers, and put those together into a bag that equals about enough food for seven big meals for one person.
(It can also feed two people about four meals, or three people about 2.6 meals, and four diners could get about two fine meals out of it. Every one is different and everyone uses our food differently. A farm doesn’t tell you what to do with the kale you get in your CSA, and we don’t tell you what to do with the dishes you get from us. Lunch, dinner, heck eat em for breakfast, I know we do!)
On Tuesday and Thursday, Metro Pedal Power deliver the meals to you by bicycle, or if you are not in their delivery area we can arrange other forms of distribution, or you can pick up.
The cost of one week’s share anytime is just $125. You couldn’t buy the ingredients for that little.
If you plan to get more than one share we offer packages. For $450 you can get four shares, to use any time over six months
We are also offering a buy 12 get one free, “baker’s dozen” special- $1350 for 13 shares, to use over six months time.
All shares include the cost of delivery within MPP’s area, which is basically, Somerville, Cambridge and parts of the surrounding cities. The fee to drive to you is usually $20, unless you live really, really far away.
This program was designed with the idea that everyone must be able to eat homemade, local food, regardless of whether they want to spend all day cooking it. We used to have bubbies; someone at home cooking for everyone, but we don’t, usually, anymore.
We are hoping that, as more and more people decide to look for healthy meal solutions, distribution systems will continue to be created and food and delivery costs will become lower as we all find it easier to source food we want.
We hope that bringing more food to more people at a price that is competitive with average take out (while being far healthier) will interest enough people to make it all work. If it interests you I would love to know that, and to tell you more.
